This conflict happened because the daughter of Apollo's priest was kidnapped by Agamemnon. The priest begged Agamemnon to release his daughter and promised that he would pay the price for her. However, Agamemnon refused to release the girl, expelled the priest, and cursed him severely.

This act made Apollo angry, leading to the important lesson taught to the Greeks. It showed that the women of any region should be respected and that the priests of any god must be listened to, attended to, and respected.
